From Team Suzuki
PROVISIONAL FRONT ROW FOR BIAGGI

Team Alstare Suzuki Corona Extra rider Max Biaggi continued his superb progress with the new GSX-R1000 K7 in qualifying for the opening World Superbike Championship round in Qatar with the third fastest time today, as team mate Yukio Kagayama finished seventh.

Both riders were satisfied with the continuing-development of the new bike and both are working on improving the bike's acceleration in preparation for Saturday's two races.

Noriyuki Haga (Yamaha) posted the day's fastest time with a lap of 1:59.019 - almost a second under the official lap record. Second fastest is James Toseland (Honda) with Biaggi third and former Alstare Suzuki Corona Extra rider Troy Corser (Yamaha) fourth.

From Ducati:
LANZI AND BAYLISS (DUCATI XEROX) GET 2007 SEASON UNDERWAY WITH FIFTH AND SIXTH QUICKEST TIMES IN QATAR FIRST QUALIFYING

Losail (Qatar), Thursday 22nd February: The 2007 World Superbike season got underway today for the Ducati Xerox Team with fifth and sixth quickest times respectively for Lorenzo Lanzi and Troy Bayliss in first qualifying in Qatar. Times were almost one second off the pace of last December's test session, but today's qualifying session was a hard-fought affair as the top six riders were all within half a second of each other.

Double world champion Bayliss took a bit of time to settle into the rhythm and was not entirely happy with his first day's performance.

"Everything is not going so bad, but we're having just a few little problems like getting the bike to do exactly what we want from when we tested here last time" he declared. "The times are not really so bad, and we're not so far off the front. It's just that everyone's riding really well at the moment and I'm missing a little something and in these conditions it doesn't take much to be down a couple of places because everyone's going very fast. We've got a few things to think about, especially at the front where we're struggling a bit but we'll try them tomorrow and hopefully I'll be a bit further up at the front.

Biaggi Ready to run World Superbike

From Team Suzuki:
SUZUKI MEN SET FOR QATAR OPENER

Team Alstare Suzuki’s Yukio Kagayama and Max Biaggi line up for this Saturday’s opening round of the 2007 World Superbike Championship at Qatar on brand new GSX-R1000 Suzukis and positive after winter testing.

Kagayama knows Qatar well - in testing and race action - but new team member Biaggi will be experiencing it for the first time in race mode: The Roman has been out of race action for over a year but has steadily improved with every test so far and his class cannot be denied. All the eyes of the world will be on him during this first race and expectations will be high.

Last year, Kagayama was on course for a terrific victory in the first race, but was taken out by his friend Noriyuki Haga when the flag was almost in sight. Team mate at the time, Troy Corser, salvaged Alstare Suzuki Corona Extra’s pride in race two with a superb win, so Qatar is regarded very positively by the team.

Factory Riders Banned From Team Hammer Events

Factory Riders Banned From Team Hammer Events

Team Hammer, Inc. has banned all factory team riders from its 2007 School, Track Day and Pro Practice Sessions, and will use the 2006 AMA Pro Racing list of factory teams to determine who is and is not a factory rider.

The ban applies to School, Track Day, and Practice sessions at Daytona International Speedway in March and October; Track Day sessions at Road Atlanta in August; and Pro Practice Sessions scheduled for the Thursday prior to AMA Superbike Nationals at California Speedway in April and at VIR in August. This decision has been made after an AMA rules change allowed all licensed riders to enter so-called "Thursday practice" in 2007. Previously, certain criteria arbitrarily restricted some riders from practicing while allowing others. The rule change sought to end previous controversies involving Thursday practice by opening it up to all racers and teams.

Team Owner John Ulrich stated, "Various factory team managers and sponsors are complaining that their costs will unreasonably increase due to a decision by AMA Pro Racing to open up Thursday practice to anyone. Recently, without any attempt to objectively determine the facts, a tabloid publication writer accused me of being in favor of opening up Thursday practice sessions because my company, Team Hammer, Inc., will profit from factory team riders having to pay to participate. The publication in question also dismissed Thursday practice as being of little or no use to private teams and riders, which anyone who has actually raced a motorcycle at an AMA National event would know is untrue.

"Team Hammer has supported Thursday practice for privateers not because of any potential profit but to help the competitive balance in the series. While the factory teams often have the best riders and machines at their disposal, they also fund more than 20 days of stand-alone private testing at AMA tracks, tests that are not open to privateers. Team Hammer Schools, Track Days, and Pro Practice Sessions are not the multi-day test sessions booked by the factory teams, but do offer an affordable way for private teams and riders to get an opportunity to test. In most cases, it is the only chance these riders and teams will get to work up to speed at a particular circuit before a race weekend begins.

"Thursday practice is not about factory teams, it is about providing private teams and riders a chance to set up their bikes and get going prior to the start of official practice on Friday," said Ulrich. "Our ban on factory riders should answer concerns that factory teams will be forced to spend money at our events as well as point out how wrong it is to claim that we're in favor of Thursday practice for the money."

Yamaha WSBK Team Revs Up for opener in Desert

From Yamaha Racing:
Yamaha teams ready for season opener at Qatar

Fastest superbike lap: 1:59.696 (Troy Bayliss, Ducati) Lap record: 2:00.061 ( Noriyuki Haga, Yamaha )
Last year's winners: Troy Corser (Suzuki) and James Toseland (Honda)

The green light comes on for the Superbike World Championship's 20th anniversary this weekend with Yamaha expecting great things in all the classes for 2007.

Round one of the 2007 series takes place at the impressive Losail circuit in Qatar, where Yamaha Motor Italia's 'dream team' will look to capitalize on an impressive testing display at the Middle Eastern circuit just over a week ago.

The squad goes into the season with a new and much improved YZF-R1 for Troy Corser and Noriyuki Haga. The latest version of the legendary superbike comes loaded with sophisticated engine management electronics as standard, including Yamaha's YCC-T (Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle) - the so-called 'fly-by-wire' system that should provide a huge help in transferring the 16-valve engine's 200+ bhp to the back tyre as smoothly as possible.
